In the next year or so, there should be balloons passing through remote areas of the southern hemisphere. Google, in cooperation with local mobile operators, has tested ballooning over the Internet for more than a year. The company is solving a major problem. For two-thirds of the world population, fast, cheap internet connections are out of reach. Google is trying to solve this problem, and the balloon flying over the Earth is twice as high as a commercial aircraft.
In June 2013, Google launched 30 high-altitude balloons in the Canterbury region of New Zealand as part of a pilot test with 50 users trying to connect to using these Internet. Then in April this year, the company announced that its balloon No. 1 encircled the Earth for 22 days. Google’s vision is to create a balloon ring, about 12.4 miles above the stratosphere, providing Internet access to remote and underserved areas. There are specially designed antennas on the balloons and ground, which can in turn be connected to local Internet service provider stations for communication.
